Agentic Commerce Readiness Checklist: What to Fix Before AI Agents Shop Your Store
An agentic commerce readiness checklist for online stores: the product data, checkout, payment and order checks to complete before AI agents shop your site.
Key takeaways
If your store runs on Shopify, agentic commerce is mostly a configuration and data question. Shopify built a channel that connects your catalog to AI shopping assistants. That is good news, and it also makes it easy to switch something on without knowing what it does.
This guide explains what Agentic Storefronts, Shopify Catalog and UCP each do, what stays your job, and what to check first. If you need the background on the protocol, read what UCP is.
According to Shopify, selling through these channels carries no channel fee. You pay the normal payment processing fees.
Shopify's help pages list conditions for Agentic Storefronts. At the time of writing they include a store based in the United States that sells to US customers, products eligible for Shopify Catalog, acceptance of the supplemental terms, store policies in place, and checkout that does not force customers to log in first. Platform support and regions are still expanding, and some channels were in early access for part of 2026. Treat every date and list you read online, including this one, as a snapshot and confirm it in your admin.
Merchants who sell on other platforms have an option too. Shopify's Agentic plan lets a brand add products to Shopify Catalog without running its storefront on Shopify. It still asks for an existing online store, business documents and solid product data.
The checkout experience depends on the AI platform. In ChatGPT, Shopify describes the buyer finishing the purchase on your online store. Copilot and Google's AI Mode offer an embedded checkout powered by UCP, and in Google's case it is limited to selected brands selling to US buyers. In every case your store stays the seller, so fulfillment, support and returns remain yours.
Shopify takes care of the plumbing: Catalog syndication, the UCP profile at /.well-known/ucp and the connection to each AI platform. You keep everything that decides whether an agent can trust and buy your products: data quality, stock accuracy, policies, shipping and returns, payments and customer service.
Shopify recommends optimizing titles, descriptions, categories and metafields, because agents rely on structured, descriptive data. In practice, start here. The deeper version of this list is in our guide to product data for AI agents.
1. Titles. Name the brand, product type and main attribute in plain words. Drop slogans and keyword stuffing.
2. Descriptions. Write facts: materials, dimensions, compatibility, what is in the box. Keep promotional language out of the first lines.
3. Product category. Pick the most specific category in Shopify's taxonomy. It drives matching and the attributes an agent can filter by.
4. Metafields. Put attributes that shoppers ask about, such as size guide, material or certification, into structured metafields instead of a paragraph of text.
5. Barcodes and SKUs. Fill the barcode field with the GTIN where one exists, and keep SKUs unique and stable.
6. Variants. Every size and color needs its own price, SKU and inventory level. A single shared stock number for all variants misleads an agent.
7. Images. One clean main image per variant with a text description.
You can decide which agentic channels may use your products. Shopify's help center says you can stop individual agentic storefronts from accessing your products through Catalog. That does not remove the products from Catalog itself, and you cannot opt out of Catalog. Reports from merchants say that changes to Catalog access can take several days to apply, and that Google's channel also depends on your Google and YouTube channel and Merchant Center settings. Verify the exact labels and timing in your own admin before you promise anything to your team.
Decide on purpose. Switching a channel off is a legitimate choice if your inventory is unreliable, your margins cannot take marketplace-style pricing pressure or your fulfillment is not ready for a new order source.
1. Open the Agentic channel in your admin and read the current terms and eligibility.
2. Fix the seven data points above for your top 50 products first.
3. Confirm stock sync runs often enough for the products you expose.
4. Publish clear shipping, return and privacy policies.
5. Allow guest checkout.
6. Test a purchase end to end from each channel you enable.
7. Name an owner for agent orders in support and finance.

Do I need a developer to turn on Agentic Storefronts?
Not for the channel itself. Switching it on happens in the Shopify admin. A developer helps when you run a custom checkout, a headless storefront or complex pricing rules.

Do I have to implement UCP myself?
No. On Shopify, the platform publishes the UCP profile for your store. Your job is the data and operations behind it. If you want the protocol details, our ACP vs UCP comparison explains how the two main standards differ.

Can I choose which AI platforms sell my products?
Yes, per channel, though you cannot opt out of Shopify Catalog itself. Check the current controls in your admin, because labels and timing can change.
╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌
What if my store is not on Shopify?
Shopify offers an Agentic plan that lets brands on other platforms add products to Shopify Catalog. You can also work with ACP and UCP directly on your own platform.
╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌╌
Will this replace my store traffic?
Agents add another way to find and buy your products. Your store, brand and search presence still matter, and clean data helps both.
